When I taught myself how to make soap, I wanted to do it as Christmas gifts for my family and friends. I went to my local Michael's craft store...I wandered around and couldn't find their cold process soap making section. Alas, they don't have one! The clerk told me I'd be better off going next door to the Barnes & Noble and seeing if they had a soap making book.
Of the millions of books that Barnes & Noble had, one--just one--of them was about cold process soap making. Typically, the best soap making books are put out by smaller, independent publishers. In other words, the high quality soap making books have to be special ordered--more waiting!
The book I ended up with was like a "soap making for dummies" from one of those generic series publishers. It had about 3 grainy black and white pictures in it. Christmas was fast approaching, so there wasn't much choice.
I am a professional freelance writer (view my freelancing site here). As I read this book I was pretty disappointed, seeing of all the gaps and half-explanations I came across. As a writer, I would've never been able to give this incomplete material out to others. The book said things like:
"When you're working with cold-process soap, there are a number of colorants that will fade, change, or disappear altogether due to their reaction to active lye" (The Everything Soap Making Book, p. 88).
The author doesn't bother to tell us what those colorants are! Furthermore, all the information I needed was spread out everywhere. There was no simple step-by-step checklist. It was full of vague information like suggesting to buy lye at the hardware or grocery store. I wasted hours driving around to these places and came home empty handed. She could've said order lye from thelyeguy.com--bam, done.
Right then and there, I pledged to create the ultimate soap making book. With each batch of soap I made over the next year, I took notes. With each soap experiment I conducted, I took notes. With each recipe, additive, or oil property I researched, I took notes.
I purchased every soap making ebook and hard-copy book I could get my hands on, and I took notes. At the insistence of my friends and family, I started selling my soaps online and at local farmer's markets and health food stores, and I took notes. I tried homemade soap from other soap makers, and I took notes. I watched every cold process soap making video on YouTube, and I took notes. PHEW!
The result of all that research and experience is Soap Making 123. I purposely chose to publish it as an ebook instead of a hard-copy book because I felt having detailed, color pictures of every step of the process was a must. As a published author (see my book here), I know that traditional publishers are all about the bottom line and give authors little say in the final outcome.
